In the issue I will cover, art lingo,
investing, as well as collecting and caring for your purchase. There will be a
page called the Gallery View, each month that will be my words to you. I know
art, I live art, and I am an art lover. Art inspires, comforts, commands,
confronts, elevates and speaks to all occasions. It is my heartfelt desire to
insure that we preserve our history. By investing in our art, we are capturing
an expression that defines a corporate feeling. Although each piece inspires us
differently, they inspire us none the less. So, please sit back and kick off
your shoes in front of your new purchase. Allow me to take you on an art filled
journey…

INVESTING 101
I am often asked the question “how do I collect
art?” There are as many answers to that question as there are people who ask.
Collecting is about preference. The connotation that art has to be expensive to
be collectable is a myth. As an art dealer I tell the novice, as well as the
seasoned collector to purchase the pieces that will be pleasurable for you to
view. One must develop an eye for the style or period of painting that inspires
them. Visit art galleries. Attend art shows, such as the ![]()

Becoming an
educated consumer is huge benefit to you. Let’s cover the no – no’s that are
universal. First of all, never expose your art to direct heat. Although it is
tempting to hang your art over a fireplace, it is not always the safest place
for display. Heat and soot can be damaging. Do not hang your art in brightly
lit areas. Some pieces will experience deterioration in strong ambient
lighting. Avoid areas that receive intense sun, to avoid heat build up and damage. Refrain from attaching lights to
frames. NEVER attempt to repair your own artwork. Leave that up to the experts.
Always store your art in a climate controlled area; never in a crawl space,
attic or basement. Always make sure that your art is properly packed for
shipping or transporting. Last, but not least, be sure to check that your art
is not hung over a direct heat register.

Let’s learn the lingo…
Original art... A one of a kind painting
Limited edition… A copy made from the original that
is often signed by the artist. Each print will be numbered to reflect the
number of prints that were made.
Remarque… (Pronounced remark)… This is a limited edition print to which the
artist adds a small drawing. The artist signs and numbers the image, adding the
letters R/M to indicate the print and the number that was produced. A remarque
is more valuable than a limited edition because the artist drawing (in essence)
makes it a one of a kind.
Artist Proof…
10 % of the Limited editions that are designated as artist proofs & signed
as such. These are more valuable than a limited edition because there are fewer
of them.
Open editions... An open edition may be produced in any
quantity & size, and for as long as the publisher wishes to produce the
print.
Original
Lithograph... An image created on a printing plate with an oily substance.
Offset Lithography … A photo-mechanical process that
uses powerful lenses to provide the basic “breaking down” of the artist’s blend
of colors into a graduation of four inks; magenta, yellow, blue & black.
Craftsmen then make “color corrections” by hand to capture some specific shade
or tone.
Intaglio… “Intaglio” is Italian & means to “cut
in” or engrave.
Giclee … (zhee – clay, French word meaning to spray)
A digital process that uses an iris printer to take an image which has been
scanned onto a disk & transfers it onto fine paper or canvass using an extremely
high quality ink jet printer. The results are amazing image detail, color
density and saturation.

Jimmy Claybrooks is commonly known as “The Master” of detail. And there
is no doubt about that title. After 25 years of experience as an illustrator,
graphic art designer, fine arts designer and sculptor, he is truly a legend in
the art community.
Jimmy has placed 1st,
in every competition that he has ever entered except for two and he placed
second in those. He is an artist without parallel. He has mastered the most
difficult painting techniques. None is more impressive as his Egg tempura
Technique. Egg Tempura is an ancient Greek technique using milk & eggs to
make paint.
